Veteran cultivators know all about the importance of humidity control in their grow space.

“The better control you have over your humidity, the safer your crop is going to be, the better product you can provide to your customers, and, at the end of the day, at a better price point,” said Brandon Sager, a Cultivation Manager at Shango Marijuana Dispensary in Las Vegas.

The better price point comes when you can maximize your yields. And that starts with getting humidity under control and optimizing your space for growth.

Greg Stefanik, another Cultivation Manager at Shango, said, “You can go anywhere from half a pound a light by not controlling your environment, up to four pounds a light by having it absolutely on point.”

Ready to apply this knowledge to your grow space? Here are four tips for dialing in your humidity control:

From Day One

Don’t wait until you see powdery mildew or bud rot to get serious about humidity control. A proper dehumidification setup is a critical part of your operation, and you should account for it from day one.

Don’t Rely on Air Conditioners

It’s true that air conditioners remove moisture from the air. But if you’re relying on them for all your dehumidification, you’ll realize pretty quickly that they can’t keep up with the demands of your space. Plus, you’ll overtax them in the process. Air conditioners are built for temperature control, not moisture removal. Both are important, and that’s why it’s critical to have systems in place that are dedicated to each area. 

Size It Right

Many growers make the mistake of installing a dehumidifier that can’t handle the demands of their crop size. Keep in mind that plants transpire nearly all of the water they take in, so if you have a fully sealed grow space, you need dehumidifiers that can remove the same amount of moisture that you’re adding to plants.

Plan Ahead

Technical problems happen. But if one area of your system goes down, you don’t want it to cascade into 10 more issues. One way to safeguard your product and revenues is to build backups into your system. That can mean installing dehumidifiers that can handle more moisture removal than you might initially need. So if one unit goes down, the others can pick up the slack and keep you running at peak efficiency.
